There is always something new in aesthetics. A new device. A new injectable. A new treatment everyone suddenly “needs.” I’m much more interested in what actually makes sense for my patients—and what earns a place in my treatment room.

That matters because when I’m evaluating a face, I’m never looking at just one thing.

I’m looking at skin quality, laxity, facial structure, volume, movement and how all of those pieces work together. Sometimes filler is appropriate. Sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes what a patient is calling “volume loss” is actually a skin-quality or laxity issue.

The goal is never to do more. It’s to choose the right treatment for what I’m actually seeing.

What Does XERF Do?

XERF uses controlled radiofrequency energy to heat tissue beneath the skin, supporting the collagen and elastin remodeling process.

Why I Chose XERF for My Parkland Practice

I get asked all the time how I decide which treatments or technologies to bring in.

My answer is pretty simple: I have to believe there is a reason for it to exist in my practice.

I don’t want five devices that essentially do the same thing. I want treatments that give me different tools for different patients.

What interested me about XERF was the combination of multi-depth radiofrequency energy, customizable treatment settings, built-in cooling and minimal interruption to everyday life.

Does XERF Hurt?

This is probably going to be one of the first questions I get.

XERF was designed with comfort in mind. During treatment, patients generally experience warmth as energy is delivered. The system combines energy delivery with cooling, and no needles or numbing are required.

I never like to promise that an aesthetic treatment is completely sensation-free because everyone experiences treatments differently. But the technology was specifically designed to make the experience more comfortable while still delivering energy where we want it.

And for my patients who don’t want to spend half their day numbing—or several days hiding afterward—that is a pretty big deal.

Is There Downtime After XERF?

One of my favorite things about XERF is how easily it can fit into real life.

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

Not everyone wants an aesthetic treatment that requires rearranging an entire week around recovery.

The number of sessions depends on your starting point, the area being treated and what we’re trying to accomplish. The manufacturer similarly recommends that treatment planning be individualized based on skin condition and goals.

When you come in, we’ll look at your skin, your facial anatomy, what bothers you and—just as importantly—what doesn’t bother you.

Then we’ll decide whether XERF makes sense and how I would incorporate it into your overall treatment plan.

Because sometimes XERF may be the focus. Other times it may be one piece of a larger plan that includes injectables, collagen stimulation or skin-quality treatments.

Who Is a Good Candidate for XERF?

XERF may be worth discussing if you’re starting to notice changes in firmness or skin laxity and want a non-invasive treatment option without needles or significant downtime.

It can also be an interesting option for someone who isn’t necessarily looking to add volume but keeps noticing that their skin or facial contours just don’t look quite as firm as they used to.

And this is important: not every concern needs filler.

Sometimes the best aesthetic plan is knowing when not to add something.
